What are the Welsh Government’s plans for animal sanctuaries during the remainder of the fifth Assembly?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs | Answered on 13/04/2018

There is a duty of care on all animal keepers to protect the welfare of animals in their care, whether on a permanent or temporary basis, in the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

The Welsh Government has received an initial draft of the voluntary Code for Practice for Animal Welfare Establishments which the Animal Welfare Network Wales (AWNW) was asked to produce.

This draft, which includes a definition of an animal welfare establishment/sanctuary, will be considered by officials and the Wales Animal Health and Welfare Framework as part of the ongoing work to update or introduce new animal welfare codes for Wales.
