Will the Cabinet Secretary outline what the average annual cost to the NHS is of employing one full time equivalent midwife?

Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services | Answered on 19/12/2017

Midwives working for the NHS are paid according to a fixed pay scale, known as Agenda for Change. A salary for a newly qualified midwife is set as a Band 5, and a midwife can then progress through the Bands working at a more senior level.

Management information shows that the vast majority of the midwifery workforce are employed as a Band 6.

Agenda for change pay scales can be found on the link below.

The average annual cost to the NHS of employing a midwife includes wider costs in addition to their salary such as pension and overtime. This information is not held centrally.
