What steps is the Welsh Government taking to offer neonatal support to women who become mothers after 35?
Neonatal care in Wales is provided according to the clinical needs of the baby and family, rather than maternal age alone. Women aged 35 and over receive individualised assessment and monitoring during pregnancy, with referral to specialist maternity and neonatal services where clinically indicated. Where a baby requires neonatal care, families can access specialist clinical care, information and emotional support, and are supported to be involved in decisions and in their baby’s care.
The Welsh Government continues to support improvements in neonatal services through the national Bliss Baby Charter programme. The programme promotes Family Integrated Care, strengthens support for parents and aims to improve the experience and outcomes of babies and families receiving neonatal care in Wales.
