OPIN-2025-0491 Opposition to expansion of UK’s nuclear weapons capability

This Senedd:
1. Notes:
a) NDM7945, passed by the Senedd, calling on all states to sign and ratify the UN’s Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons; and
b) the UK Government’s decision to purchase 12 US F-35A nuclear-capable fighter jets.
2. Regrets this expansion of Britain’s nuclear capability, breaching its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
3. Believes this move increases global instability, diverts billions from essential public services, and contributes to climate breakdown.
4. Calls on the UK Government to reverse this decision, recommit to nuclear disarmament, prioritise diplomacy and peace, and work to pursue foreign policy based on de-escalation, diplomacy and international cooperation.
