OPIN-2025-0457 Importance of Welsh Universities (e) Tabled on 27/01/2025

This Senedd:
1. Notes:
a) Welsh universities add massive value to our economy and communities;
b) university staff face a combination of job losses, a wage-freeze and the threat of compulsory redundancies, such conditions do not currently exist in the Welsh public sector and have serious implications for University staff and learners;
c) in contrast to schools, health boards or local authorities, competitive conditions prevent universities from speaking openly about financial pressures, placing them at a disadvantage; and
d) action needs to be taken to financially stabilise Welsh universities and there is a need to work with the UK government to devise a long-term solution.
