OPIN-2023-0361 Remembering Hiroshima - Mayors for Peace (e) Tabled on 11/07/2023

This Senedd:

1. Notes that:

a) on 6 and 9 August 1945 the USA dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing an estimated number of 140,000 and 74,000 people respectively;

b) in 1982, Hiroshima Mayor, Takeshi Araki, established the Mayors for Peace initiative and called for cities throughout the world to join the call for nuclear abolition; and

c) the Senedd supported a motion calling on all states to sign and ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on 9 March 2022.

2. Encourages county, town, community and city councils to adopt a Peace Champion and support Mayors for Peace.
